Pensamiento o consignas
Me gusta aquello que decía Novalis de que “la filosofía es propiamente nostalgia, es decir un anhelo de estar en casa”. No, no soy un idealista a la manera del romanticismo alemán. Si cito esta frase del exaltado poeta y filósofo sajón, además de hacerlo atraído por su belleza formal, es porque considero que es una invitación a ir al fondo de las cosas, lo que no nos viene mal en una época en que la cultura, dominada por los medios de comunicación de masas, se mueve para bien y para mal en la superficie. Personalmente compruebo que pensar con profundidad la realidad me ayuda a orientarme en medio del tráfico de tanta información que me inunda y me hace preguntarme dónde estoy.
Sí, seguramente la búsqueda de la verdad, que no es otra cosa que la tarea de la filosofía, me concede “sentirme en casa” o, al menos, “en camino a casa”.
Tal vez parezca un optimista, aunque más bien soy un hombre con esperanza que afirma que el estudio y la reflexión pueden y deben darnos una energía que va más allá de la que nos aporta la propaganda. Una energía espiritual necesaria para movernos con acierto entre tantos datos que los medios de comunicación, los grandes líderes de nuestro tiempo, nos están continuamente ofreciendo.
He oído decir que una vez Manuel Azaña una vez afirmó que “si los españoles hablasen sólo de lo que saben, se produciría un silencio sepulcral que nos permitiría pensar”. No he podido comprobar si es totalmente exacta la frase. Pero creo que refleja una evidencia y, desgraciadamente, constatable no sólo entre los españoles del tiempo de Azaña. Me parece además que la afirmación no se debería reducir a los españoles, aunque las culturas mediterráneas dadas a la charla en la plaza pública sean más proclives a “hablar por hablar”. Lo cierto es que, teniendo en cuenta la experiencia adquirida al haber andado por los cinco continentes, yo me atrevería a elevar a categoría de universal el famoso dicho. Y esto me parece muy peligroso.
Cuando uno no piensa a fondo la realidad, será sujeto pasivo de su vivir. Si uno no piensa por sí mismo, se someterá con facilidad a los dictados de lo que se dice, se piensa, se comenta. Efectivamente, el impersonal es la forma más adecuada para designar el tipo de actuación propia de los individuos en una sociedad de consumo permanente e indiscriminado de productos y de consignas. Una de las más relevantes mercancías de nuestro tiempo es la noticia. Y desde luego el principio periodístico de que la “realidad no te estropee una buena noticia” hoy más que nunca está en vigor en los medios. En verdad los medios de comunicación son un arma poderosa para defender tanto lo mejor como lo peor en la sociedad. La libertad de prensa, radio, televisión, sobre todo hoy en día la libertad de esta última, es una condición sine qua non del ejercicio de la libertad en sociedad. Por tanto no seré yo el que vaya en contra de los medios, se entiende de los medios libres. El problema es que los medios se convierten cada vez más en cadena de trasmisión ideológica de unos poderes que no siempre fomentan la libertad sino más bien la sumisión. La sumisión del pensamiento, sea éste político, cultural, económico o eclesial, sí eclesial, pues a pesar de mi condición, no me duelen prendas al aceptar que también la Iglesia puede caer y de hecho cae en esa tendencia.
Cuando abogo, como solución ante la avalancha de los datos impuestos, por pensar por uno mismo, no estoy abogando por algo que hoy en día se escucha con facilidad: “yo pienso así y basta”. Como si el hecho de poner delante o detrás de una afirmación el posesivo de primera persona, ya diera a esa afirmación condición de verdadera. No, no estoy yendo por ahí. Se trata de enfrentar con rigor y disciplina el estudio de las cosas.
Es éste un tema sobre el que me gustaría volver. Aunque por ahora quiero dejarlo aquí ofreciendo una cierta conclusión provisional. Sin la disciplina mental y afectiva que el estudio continuo requiere, la verdad quedará reducida a consigna repetida en la inercia de la memoria ciega y el discurso de todo tipo: político, económico, cultural, eclesial se verá rebajado a una triste función de propaganda.
