En la Eucaristía de apertura del nuevo Sínodo, en presencia de los obispos y cardenales convocados, el Papa pronunció unas palabras sobre lo que todos sabemos o intuimos, pero que pronunciadas por él, adquieren una mayor relevancia. Hablando de cómo la fe cristiana se está debilitando en algunos países, hasta el punto de llegar a extinguirse, afirma que de hecho, algunas de las primeras comunidades cristianas que eran inicialmente florecientes, posteriormente han desaparecido y actualmente sólo se las recuerda en los libros de historia. Y se pregunta si no podrá ocurrir lo mismo en nuestra época. Y la respuesta a esa pregunta, es que, no sólo puede ocurrir, sino que ya está ocurriendo.
Si en otro tiempo fue el norte de África, de donde desapareció el cristianismo, habiendo sido una de las regiones más sólidamente cristianas, hoy puede ser una buena parte de Europa, la gran evangelizadora durante siglos, la que está a punto de descristianizarse. No hace tanto tiempo que el entonces Papa, Juan Pablo II afirmase que Europa era ya “país de misión”. Necesitada, por tanto, de ser nuevamente evangelizada.
Y la causa de estos vaivenes la ve el mismo Benedicto XVI, en la influencia destructiva de una cierta cultura moderna; y , en no pocas ocasiones, en la frialdad y rebelión de cristianos incoherentes.
Jesús predice en el Evangelio, hablando de la futura iglesia, que el poder del infierno no la derrotará. Y la afirmación se fundamenta en la asistencia constante del Espíritu Santo y la presencia del mismo Cristo “hasta el final de los tiempo”. Pero todo eso, contando con la voluntad del hombre que acoja voluntariamente el mensaje evangélico. Por eso San Agustín, dejó dicho:”El que te creó sin ti, no te salvará sin ti”.
Esa “incoherencia” de los cristianos, de que habla el Papa, avanza en muchos lugares, en otro tiempo cristianos, hacia un ateismo práctico. Ni siquiera se preguntan ya sobre la existencia de Dios, sobre la razón de ser de la Iglesia. Su postura es vivir al margen de esas cuestiones. La excesiva y mal entendida autonomía del hombre le lleva a prescindir de lo que no sea “él mismo y sus circunstancias”.
No corren ciertamente vientos favorables, ni para la Iglesia ni siquiera para el Evangelio. Enjaulamos al Espíritu Santo; hacemos callar a Dios, o le dejamos que hable en medio del ruido ensordecedor de otros intereses ajenos, si no contrarios, al espíritu, e incluso a la letra, del cristianismo.
Ante esta perspectiva de futuro, que es ya realidad de presente en no pocos lugares, no cabe ni el desánimo ni la desesperanza. Además de las palabras de Jesús ya citadas, tenemos, también, la conclusión de la Palabra de Dios, en el libro del Apocalipsis, donde pone de manifiesto que al final será el triunfo del bien, el triunfo de Dios.
