Cuando hoy hemos recibido la noticia de que el nuevo libro sobre el P. Damián, “Damián a través de sus cartas”, está ya en circulación, no he podido evitar escribir algo: del libro y del escritor, Osvaldo Aparicio ss.cc. Después de haberlo leído, de haber comentado su contenido y, sobre todo, de haber visto la ilusión, el empeño y la profesionalidad del autor en su cometido, puedo decir que en este año de la canonización es un libro imprescindible para prepararnos al gran acontecimiento que transcurrirá el próximo 11 de octubre. En los últimos años he tenido la suerte de coincidir con Osvaldo en la Casa Madre de la Congregación de los Sagrados Corazones, en París, concretamente en la calle Picpus, de tantas resonancias para nuestra familia religiosa. Allí nos juntamos un grupo de hermanos y hermanas para proponer iniciativas para profundizar y dar a conocer el carisma de los Sagrados Corazones. Osvaldo, experimentado conocedor del sueño de nuestros Fundadores, siempre tiene algo interesante que aportar. Como ocurre ahora también con su libro. Damián nos ha dejado, a través de las cartas que escribe a su familia y a sus hermanos de la Congregación, un impactante relato de su aventura en Molokai y de sus vivencias más íntimas. Osvaldo nos introduce en la vida de Damián con breves comentarios a sus cartas que, a modo de flash, nos adentran en el corazón de Damián. Me gustaría compartir con los lectores de nuestro blog, el breve capítulo que lleva por título “El gallinero de Damián”. Ahora que casi todo el mundo anda tan agobiado, les propongo que antes de dormir se lean un capitulito de este libro. A la larga seguro que se sentirán contagiados por la alegría que envolvió a Damián. Gracias, Osvaldo, por este regalo que nos haces en este año. Gracias por todo lo que nos aportas: la cordialidad y la sabiduría que están en el fondo de una honda trayectoria en la vida religiosa, en la familia de Damián.
EL GALLINERO DE DAMIÁN
Damián guardó siempre predilección por el pandano, árbol que le cobijó sus primeros días y noches. Después “pude hacerme una casita de madera de dieciséis pies de largo por diez de ancho”. Con el tiempo consiguió construirse algo mejor y de lo que estaba muy satisfecho: “Si alguno de mis amigos viene a verme, podré alojarlo en el piso superior”.(Febrero 1879) Damián cuenta a su familia sabrosos detalles de su quehacer diario: “Voy a contaros ahora algo de mi vida diaria. Vivo solo en mi casa. Los enfermos nunca entran. Por la mañana, después de la misa, una mujer que no está enferma, me prepara la comida, que consiste en arroz, carne, café y unas galletas. Por la tarde aprovecho las sobras de la comida con una taza de te que caliento en mi infiernillo. Mi gallinero me abastece con suficiencia de huevos para mi cocina. Es verdad que sólo hago dos comidas, mañana y tarde; rara vez como al mediodía. Como veis, vivo sobradamente; no paso hambre. Durante el día estoy tan poco en casa …” M. Stoddard, uno de los visitantes de Damián, cuenta deliciosos detalles que reflejan que sigue siendo el sencillo campesino de Tremelo: “El Padre salió con un puñado de grano que esparció a su alrededor, al tiempo que hacía ese sonido particular al que todas las aves del cielo parecieron responder. Vinieron de todas partes a posarse en sus hombros, en sus brazos, en sus manos e, incluso, en su cabeza, y pronto se vio rodeado de volátiles que serían la envidia del mejor de los gallineros. Se sentía orgulloso; le gustaban y se ocupaba de ellas. Constituía su descanso y entretenimiento; no obstante, para cumplir sus deberes de hospitalidad, sacrificó dos …”
