Juan del Río y el Padre Damián
La revista 21 está publicando en los últimos meses una sección, “Preparándonos para la canonización”, en la que se incluyen testimonios en torno al Padre Damián. En el número de mayo aparece el del arzobispo Juan del Río. Siendo obispo de Jerez, siempre recordaba el 10 de mayo la figura del P. Damián, que coincidía con la festividad de San Juan de Ávila –patrono del clero secular-. He aquí su testimonio.
“La devoción al P. Damián de Molokai es algo que me viene de familia. Después de la muerte de mi madre, entre sus papeles encontramos un vieja estampa del ‘apóstol de los leprosos’ que ella conservó y a quien siempre atribuyó la curación de una grave enfermedad de una hermana mía cuando era pequeña. La misma biografía de este religioso de los Sagrados Corazones supuso en mi adolescencia y juventud y un gran estímulo para mi entrada en el Seminario.
Ahora, pasados los años, y próxima su Canonización su figura se agiganta, porque en tiempos de tanta turbación, confusión y dispersión, su ejemplo nos sitúa en lo esencial para todo cristiano y muchos más para aquellos consagrados por el Reino de los cielos: Amor a Dios sobre toda las cosas, celo apostólico por la salvación de las almas y esperanza en la vida eterna como única recompensa a la total entrega de nuestras vidas”.
