Tenía muchas escenas conmovedoras, pero la que recuerdo más es la escena en que Damián descubre que está leproso al poner sus pies en agua hirviendo y no sentir nada.
Y luego viene su predicación dominical: “Nosotros los leprosos”.
Estas palabras las he sentido siempre como la culminación de la cercanía de Damián con sus queridos leprosos. Compartir y cercanía que es la de Jesús, a quién Damián sirvió fielmente. Muchas veces en al Eucaristía, pienso en esa misa en la que Damián anunció su enfermedad. La repetición ministerial de las palabras de Cristo “esto es mi cuerpo entregado, esta es mi sangre derramada” toman en ese momento un realismo sorprendente. La distancia que podía haber entre Damián y los suyos se borra, tal como la Encarnación de Jesús lo hizo para toda la humanidad.
Por eso, San Damián será una luz potente para nuestro mundo de hoy y para la Congregación. Yo lo invoco para que nos ayude a llevar adelante lo que queremos hacer en esta tierras: Ser discípulos-misioneros; pedir la gracia de nuestra conversión personal y pastoral; acercarnos a un mundo que sufre y que necesita cercanía, acogida y comprensión; ir donde los alejados con esperanza; creer y crecer en la opción por los pobres, comprendiendo de manera definitiva que “el encuentro con Jesucristo en los pobres es una dimensión constitutiva de nuestra fe en Jesucristo” (Aparecida, 257).
