Dar a luz en Ruanda
Estoy convencido de que los mejores reporteros del mundo son los misioneros. Ellos nos acercan a realidades prácticamente inaccesibles. Son profecía y compromiso, ojos misericordiosos en medio de una realidad hostil y, con frecuencia, violenta. Luis Felipe Soto ss.cc., misionero en Ruanda, nos cuenta el nacimiento de un niño. Él lo llama: “Una historia entrañable”.
Esta vez la puedo contar y su final fue feliz, bien que el pobre bebé pasó lo suyo. Me paseaba por el Hospital con dos médicos españoles que habían venido a visitarnos, en concreto estábamos en la Maternidad, con la responsable de la misma, una Hija de la Caridad.
La responsable del servicio social vino a decirnos que una mujer embarazada camino del Hospital había parido en el campo y que había que ir de urgencia para cortar el cordón umbilical y asistir a la madre y al bebé. Y allí fuimos, la madre tumbada en la camilla, que aquí utilizan para transportar los enfermos y que llaman injobi, traducido sería la ambulancia del Distrito; el bebé por el suelo, entre ramitas, ramajos, toda la suciedad… aún con el cordón y la placenta.
Los curiosos de siempre, la familia había tendido un paño, no para proteger al niño, sino para evitar curiosos y darle una cierta intimidad al momento; allí estaba nuestro bebé, sucio, solito y desamparado, la madre no estaba con él.
Eficaces fueron los médicos y la Hermana y en poco tiempo lo limpiaron, recogieron todos los restos del parto y al Hospital; en mi vida me había encontrado yo con una situación igual. Legados al Hospital, limpiar al niño, asistirlo, pesarlo -2,300 kg.-; asistir a la madre, curarla, encamarla…
Hubo que meter al bebé en una incubadora pues estaba muy frío, pero como podéis ver en la foto que os mando allí reposaba tranquilito, pasada ya su odisea. Gracias a Dios esto el bebé no lo recordará nunca. Pero a mí me hace pensar en el sufrimiento y riesgos de tantos bebés por estas tierras y la situación a la que están sometidas las madres, el traslado en el injobi puede durar horas y siempre expuestas al calor, la lluvia o la noche que se les echa encima…
Al final de esta historia entrañable, los más tocados por el tema fueron los dos médicos españoles, que se tragaron más de una lágrima y no olvidarán nunca a este pequeño bebé y sus circunstancias.
