Prometía marcar un antes y un después en la historia del cine, al igual que hicieron otros títulos como El cantor de jazz en 1927 (primera película sonora) o La feria de las vanidades en 1935 (primera película en color); así que me acomodé en mi butaca y me dispuse a disfrutar de tal acontecimiento. Fueron dos horas y media de puro entretenimiento que se pasaron muy rápido. La historia es sencilla y la hemos visto en muchas otras películas: dos civilizaciones se enfrentan y el protagonista se cambia de bando en cuanto descubre el valor de la que está siendo amenazada.
Además, el relato está aderezado con un alegato ecologista y una espiritualidad panteísta que pretende otorgar profundidad a la película. El resultado final, sin embargo, es maniqueo y superficial, suficiente para pasar un buen rato en el cine pero poco más. No obstante, la película promueve valores como la tolerancia y el diálogo e incluso, y siempre que contenga el panteísmo que profesa la película, algún pastoralista osado podría servirse de las escenas en las que el protagonista va conociendo a los “Na’ví” (los habitantes azules del planeta “Pandora”) para ilustrar la fascinación del hombre ante lo mistérico o la actitud de reconocimiento ante lo sagrado.
Pese a todo, Avatar marcará un antes y un después al convertirse en la primera película rodada en formato 3D, pero no pasará a la historia más que por sus extraordinarios avances técnicos. Sin embargo, no dejéis pasar la oportunidad de verla en el cine en tres dimensiones, merece la pena.
