La verdad es que me supo a poco la primera entrevista con mi hermano
Damián. Me prometí volver… y ahora vuelvo. Entrevistar a Damián (San Damián) es todo un privilegio y una suerte.
— Una de las curiosidades que tengo, es saber cómo te desplazabas de un lugar a otro, sabiendo que Molokai es una isla abrupta y montañosa. Hoy día los misioneros se desplazan a los lugares más remotos, incluso la selva, en un todo terreno o en ligeras avionetas. En las ciudades tienen motos, coches…. Tú ¿qué?
- Te puedes imaginar que en aquel tiempo no había ninguno de esos artilugios tan rápidos y cómodos. Y aunque los hubiera, no hubiéramos podido gozar de ellos. Nuestra economía era la de los pobres más pobres. Mi medio de transporte era un caballo, que de vez en cuando, aunque yo le trataba bien, me jugaba alguna mala pasada. Lo digo, porque más de una vez me hizo rodar por los suelos, al negarse a caminar por aquellos vericuetos infernales. Muchos recorridos los hacía a pie.
— Así que volvías a casa con los pies desechos. Otra cosa, Damián:¿cómo te recibían los leprosos? Supongo que estarían esperando tu visita.
- No creas que fue todo muy fácil. Al principio tenían grandes recelos. No podían entender que alguien sano y fuerte, fuese desinteresadamente a ocuparse de ellos. ¡No dejaba de ser una locura! Seguramente habría sido enviado por el gobierno par paliar la situación y poner orden en la isla. Ni que decir tiene que gozaría de un buen sueldo. Estaría allí algún tiempo, y después se marcharía con sus buenos dineros a vivir tranquilo, y olvidarse del infierno. Y era lógico que pensasen así. No podían entender que alguien fuese allí por amor. No se creían merecedores de ser amados. Su autoestima estaba por los suelos.
— Y ¿después?
- Gracias a Dios y mi entrega desinteresada no tomando demasiadas precauciones, fueron dejándose querer… y empezaron a quererme. ¡Qué alegría se producía en mi corazón al ver estos nuevos signos de acercamiento y amistad! Aquello compensaba todos los riesgos y cansancios que suponían el tener que buscarlos, algunas veces, (los más enfermos y deformados, por los lugares más recóndito y escondidos.
— ¿Qué supuso para ti en aquellos años, la celebración de la Eucaristía y la Adoración?
- Te puedes imaginar. Era como recuperar la serenidad, el gozo del encuentro con el que me había llevado a Molokai, y el que me mantenía allí, a pesar de los pesares. ¡Qué descanso espiritual! Allí me llenaba de energías espirituales y de ánimos, para seguir la misión de cada día. Esas horas altas de la noche, en el silencio total, adorando a Dios, encomendándole a mis leprosos, especialmente a los más graves o más reacios, eran el bálsamo que curaba mis cansancios o las posibles desilusiones. El encuentro directo con Dios, era el motor para el encuentro con mis hermanos sufrientes que me esperaba al día siguiente.
— Me pregunto qué hubieras hecho si hubieses vivido en estos nuestros tiempos. ¿Dónde o cómo hubieras proyectado tu trabajo misionero?
- El lugar no lo sé, porque eso depende de las circunstancias, y de lo que Dios me orientase. Pero ¿no crees que también hoy hay muchos “Molokais”? Hoy, también, hay muchos lugares de marginación: Sida, hambre, sin-techo… También sigue habiendo mucha lepra en el sentido auténtico de la palabra y en el sentido metafórico. Por tanto hay campo amplio. Lo que pasa es que hay que decidirse a vivir con ellos, cerca de ellos, para ellos…
