San Damián, ayer y hoy
Hace unos días descubrí un libro de un autor que tuvo una gran influencia en Gandhi: Tolstói. Coincidiendo con el centenario de la muerte de este escritor, la editorial Kairós acaba de publicar “El reino de Dios está en vosotros”. En este texto, el literato y pensador ruso somete a un implacable examen a la Iglesia y al Estado. Para el autor de Guerra y Paz el mal que impera en el mundo acabará cuando vivamos de acuerdo con las enseñanzas de Jesús y su doctrina de la no resistencia al mal con la violencia.
La obra fue censurada en Rusia, aunque corrió de mano en mano de manera clandestina y fue muy discutida por la crítica rusa. Rápidamente se tradujo y publicó en el extranjero. En la edición de Kairós aparece la breve pero interesante correspondencia que mantuvieron Tolstói y Gandhi.
En el capítulo V, que lleva por título “La contradicción entre nuestra vida y nuestra conciencia cristiana”, Tolstói alude al Padre Damián:
“Nosotros, las naciones cristianas, que vivimos una misma vida espiritual, por lo que cualquier idea noble y fecunda que aparece en una punta del mundo, y que es inmediatamente difundida entre todas las sociedades cristianas, nos despierta los mismos sentimientos de alegría y orgullo con independencia de cuál sea nuestra nacionalidad; nosotros, que apreciamos a los pensadores, filántropos, poetas y científicos de otras naciones; nosotros, que nos enorgullecemos de las hazañas de Damián, como si fueran propias; nosotros, que amamos a personas de otros pueblos: franceses, alemanes, americanos, ingleses; nosotros, que no sólo admiramos sus cualidades, sino que nos alegramos cuando nos encontramos con ellos, les sonreímos alegremente, que no podemos considerar como un logro estar en guerra con ellos, ni mucho menos pensar sin horrorizarnos que entre ellos y nosotros puedan surgir conflictos que deban ser resueltos con el asesinato mutuo; en resumen, todos nosotros estamos llamados a participar en una masacre inminente, que si no se produce hoy, lo hará el día de mañana”.
El traductor, Joaquín Fernández-Valdés Roig-Gironella, inserta la siguiente nota relativa al Padre Damián de Molokai: “Misionero católico belga (1840-1889) que consagró su vida a la curación de leprosos en Hawai. Mahatma Gandhi lo consideraba un héroe, un ejemplo que se debía seguir en la lucha en favor de los desfavorecidos”.
Y esta mañana, el Papa Benedicto XVI, proponía de nuevo a Damián como modelo para los belgas a los obispos del país de origen del santo misionero. San Damián, un ejemplo ayer y hoy, una caridad y generosidad actual, nunca pasada de moda, siempre necesaria. Esto decía el Papa:
Un acontecimiento significativo para hoy y para mañana fue la canonización del padre Damián De Veuster. Este nuevo santo habla a la conciencia de los belgas. ¿Acaso no ha sido designado como el hijo más ilustre de todos los tiempos de la nación? Su grandeza, vivida en el don total de sí mismo a sus hermanos leprosos hasta el punto de quedar contagiado y morir, está en su riqueza interior, en su oración constante, en su unión con Cristo, a quien veía en sus hermanos y que, como Él, se entregaba sin reservas. En este Año Sacerdotal, es necesario proponer su ejemplo sacerdotal y misionero, en particular a los sacerdotes y religiosos. La disminución del número de sacerdotes no debe ser percibida como un proceso inevitable. El Concilio Vaticano II afirma con fuerza que la Iglesia no puede prescindir del ministerio de los sacerdotes. Por tanto es necesario y urgente darles su lugar adecuado y reconocer el carácter sacramental irremplazable. De ahí se deriva la necesidad de una amplia y seria pastoral de las vocaciones, basada en el carácter ejemplar de la santidad de los sacerdotes, en la atención a los gérmenes de vocación presentes en muchos jóvenes y en la oración asidua y confiada, según la recomendación de Jesús (cf. Mateo 9, 37).
