martin-luther-kingHace pocos días, escribía sobre alguien, un periodista, que iba a ser beatificado en breve: Lolo. Hoy traigo a colación la frase de otro gran hombre, no canonizado por la Iglesia porque no era católico, pero canonizado ya por el pueblo. El pueblo tiene un gran olfato para detectar lo que es auténtico. Martín Luther King era un pastor estadounidense de la iglesia bautista. Un hombre de Dios, comprometido con su pueblo y con su raza. Corrían malos tiempos para el pueblo negro en EE.UU. Y él tomó la causa de su liberación, rubricando su compromiso con la muerte.

Aunque no sea lo más importante de su biografía (cosa que no pretendo hacer), sí que me ha llamado la atención una de sus frases por la fuerza de su contenido. Dijo en una ocasión:”Si supiera que el mundo se acaba mañana, yo, hoy todavía, plantaría un árbol”.

Una frase significativa, aunque a algunos les podrá parecer una simpleza, una pérdida de tiempo (cuando queda tan poco), o un idealismo irresponsable. Ese es el pensamiento pragmático, utilitario, sin más horizonte que lo inmediato. Pero en la vida hay, además, otras formas de pensar y de actuar. Existe lo que llamamos la “utopía”, término concebido por Tomás Moro, y que designa la proyección humana de un mundo idealizado que se presenta como alternativo al mundo realmente existente, ejerciendo así una crítica sobre éste.

Si se hiciese una encuesta, preguntando: “¿Qué harías hoy, si supieras que el mundo se acabará mañana?, me imagino que habría contestaciones de lo más variopinto. De todo, menos “plantar un árbol”; ¿para qué plantar un árbol con fecha de caducidad a las veinticuatro horas?

Cuando se sueña, responsablemente, con un mundo mejor, cualquier momento es bueno para mejorarlo, incluso veinticuatro horas antes del fin del mundo. Hay un himno en una de las Horas intermedias del Oficio Divino, que empuja a seguir trabajando mientras el tiempo exista, para completar la creación de Dios, para re-crear el mundo, tratando de mejorarlo. Y son estos versos:

Nos señalaste un trozo de la viña / y nos dijiste: «Venid y trabajad.»

     Nos sacaste al desierto con el alba / y nos dijiste: «Levantad la ciudad.»

     Pusiste una herramienta en nuestras manos / y nos dijiste: «Es tiempo de crear.

Por eso, la intuición de Luther King (plantando un árbol en las últimas horas del mundo), me parece un acto de fidelidad al Creador.
