Pioneros y colonos

colonosHace unos días, en una charla, en El Escorial, el conferenciante habló mucho de “pioneros y colonos”. Se entendía por “pioneros” a las personas que iban roturando y abriendo caminos nuevos (se refería a la iglesia, y a la vida religiosa). Por el contrario, se entendía por “colonos”, aquellas otras personas que gozaban de la situación lograda por los pioneros; gente de no abrir nuevos caminos, sino de vivir en los terrenos conquistados (colonos).

En los comentarios de los asistentes se decía que no todos tienen que ser pioneros; y que vivir como “colonos”, era más seguro, con menos riesgos; y que no todos sirven para ser “pioneros”.

Yo estaba más o menos de acuerdo. Ciertamente el riesgo es distinto. El que abre nuevos caminos está más expuesto a equivocarse, a no ser comprendido, a llevarse los primeros palos, a vivir un tanto en la frontera entre el pasado, el presente y el futuro. Por el contrario, los “colonos”, tienen la seguridad de lo ya aceptado mayoritariamente, de lo bendecido o canonizado por la autoridad. Se ven libres del sobresalto de lo nuevo y desconocido. La mayoría de las personas se apuntan, consciente o inconscientemente, a esta situación.

He reflexionado después, con más tranquilidad y con cierta distancia; y he llegado a alguna conclusión. En todos los aspectos de la vida, pero concretamente centrándome en la vida y actitud del que forma parte de la Iglesia, no cabe ser sólo pionero ni sólo colono. Todos tenemos que tener ambas actitudes. No podemos vivir sólo de lo que otros han adquirido con su esfuerzo, a base de correr riesgos y, con frecuencia, incomprensiones y descalificaciones, pero ya reconocido y poseído pacíficamente. Nadie puede vivir de las rentas de otros. Si queremos  que la verdad avance, que la iglesia progrese, se purifique y actualice, debemos seguir el ejemplo de los que, guiados por el Espíritu, trataron de romper moldes viejos (“a vino nuevo, odres nuevos”), y se esforzaron por una iglesia renovada, cada vez más cercana al Evangelio y al hombre actual. Todos debemos ser, al mismo tiempo, pioneros y colonos.

La historia de la Iglesia sabe mucho de estas personas que estuvieron en la brecha; algunos fueron descalificados con dureza, aunque más tarde, con frecuencia, se les ha rehabilitado. Pero ya tarde para ahorrarles el sufrimiento de la exclusión y el menosprecio. Ha habido grandes pioneros, gente lúcida, gente valiente, gente fiel, gente comprometida, gente muy amante de la Iglesia pero que no le gustaban muchas cosas de la Iglesia. Pero ha habido, y hay, gente que fueron y siguen siendo pioneros, aunque de manera más callada, menos llamativa. En el día a día. Gente que ha luchado, y sigue haciéndolo, para que el evangelio sea la norma fundamental que orienta y rige esta iglesia, a veces demasiado humana. Gente que desde la palabra, o la vida, va abriendo caminos de compromiso por el Reino. Gentes que trata de vivir con más radicalidad el evangelio, pero que suponen una chinita en el zapato para los que a toda costa prefieren conservar tradiciones, normas, liturgias y teologías, que fueron fruto del pasado. Pienso que muchos santos, humildes, callados, escondidos, sin relumbrón humano, fueron algunos de esos pioneros.
