Hoy en día no es nada sencillo dar con una película que trate el tema de la vocación. Es más, encontrar un título que aborde esta cuestión de forma explícita pero que al mismo tiempo pueda resultar atractivo para el espectador actual seguramente sea misión imposible. Por lo tanto, de momento habrá que conformarse con hacer una lectura vocacional, más o menos evidente, de algunas películas que, de forma intencionada o no, abordan tangencialmente el asunto.
Dentro de este último grupo se ubica La joven del agua, una cinta de Michael Night Shyamalan (director, entre otras, de la famosa El sexto sentido) que se mueve entre el suspense y el cuento infantil sin salirse del marco de lo fantástico. La historia parte de una leyenda sobre la existencia de un mundo acuático habitado por unos seres que, a modo de oráculos, orientan la vida de los hombres. Story, uno de estos seres, irrumpe en medio de una urbanización para llevar a cabo la tarea que le ha sido encomendada, pero para ello necesita la ayuda de algunos de los vecinos, que deberán descubrir qué tarea han de ejercer para que la misión tenga éxito.
Uno de los aspectos más interesantes de la película es el modo en que refleja la gravedad de la decisión vocacional, puesto que, cuando algún personaje intenta asumir el rol que no le toca, la misión fracasa. Ahora bien, a diferencia de otras historias en las que lo vocacional aparece a través de un personaje presentado casi como un héroe que ha hecho frente, él solo, a no pocas dificultades; en este caso se acentúa el valor de lo comunitario, no sólo porque la misión sea común, sino porque unos a otros se ayudan a descubrir el rol que están llamados a desempeñar, así como a superar las dificultades, que en esta vez brotan del interior de los personajes al modo del profeta Jeremías (“mira, Señor que no sé hablar”).
