Austeridad, esa difícil manera de vivir

austeridadCuando hablo de vivir con austeridad, me refiero a hacerlo consciente y voluntariamente. No por necesidad o carencias no deseadas. La austeridad es sinónimo de sobriedad. Se se aplica a las cosas, es la falta de adornos superfluos. Si se trata de la vida de las personas se refiere a un estilo de conducta sin gastos innecesarios y superfluos.

No es fácil encontrar personas, familias, instituciones, que vivan con austeridad, con sobriedad, pudiendo hacerlo en la abundancia, si no en el despilfarro. La austeridad voluntaria  es una virtud, que no se identifica con la pobreza, sino con el dominio de los gustos, caprichos y gastos innecesarios. Hoy día, a causa de la crisis económica, hay mucha gente y muchas familias que tienen que vivir austeramente  a su pesar. Eso no lo considero virtud, porque no es voluntaria y querida.

El buen uso de los bienes materiales nos debe llevar a esa austeridad de vida, porque hay quien vive en la extrema pobreza. Todo lo que es “de sobra”, no nos pertenece. Y si nos lo apropiamos, estamos, de alguna manera, robando a otros, según la doctrina de los “santos padres” de la Iglesia: Ambrosio (340-397), Agustín de Hipona (354-430), Gregorio Magno (540-604), Atanasio (296-373), Juan Crisóstomo (347-407,  Basilio de Cesarea (329-379), Gregorio Nacianceno, etc.

. Recuerdo una frase muy iluminativa de Ghandi, que decía: “Hay que vivir sencillamente, para que los demás puedan, sencillamente, vivir”.

La austeridad es un término “relativo”; difiere de una situación u otra. No se puede medir por lo que se gasta. Por ejemplo, una familia de seis hijos necesita tener más gastos que una con un único hijo; una persona o familia que tenga un rol en la sociedad que le exige unas ciertas relaciones sociales: viajes, representaciones, etc. Por tanto, la austeridad no se puede medir por el gasto que se origina, sino más bien por aquello de lo que se priva.

Pasando de lo meramente especulativo, al terreno de lo práctico, creo que se debe afirmar que todos debemos ser austeros en nuestra vida. Repito que no es fácil, ya que fácilmente la sociedad nos bombardea constantemente invitándonos a gastar, a consumir. Un buen ejemplo es el de las compras que se hacen en las famosas “rebajas” de temporada. Muchas veces se compra, simplemente porque es más barato, y porque la propaganda nos impele a hacerlo. Estamos inmersos en la sociedad del consumo, que podríamos tachar de enfermedad, cuyos síntomas son los gastos innecesarios o caprichosos. La tentación está en la misma sociedad, que da más importancia al tener que al ser. Y para mucha gente vales lo que tienes. ¡Craso error, pero realidad patente!

¿Nos imaginamos a Cristo haciendo gastos no necesarios, después de haber enseñado que no debemos acumular riquezas: “No os hagáis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones minan y hurtan; sino haceos tesoros en el cielo. Porque donde esté vuestro tesoro, allí estará también vuestro corazón”. Y  dijo también: “Mirad, y guardaos de toda avaricia; porque la vida del hombre no consiste en la abundancia de los bienes que posee”.

Nos hemos acostumbrado de tal manera a “tener”, que se nos olvida que otros “no tienen”. La falta de austeridad, es, de alguna forma, falta de caridad, falta de amor al prójimo. Nos olvidamos del mandamiento del amor proclamado por Jesús en la última Cena:”amaos unos a otros, como yo os he amado”. Y Jesús, dice la Carta a los Filipenses:”se despojó de su rango”.

Termino, una vez más, con las palabras de Jesús: “el que pueda entender, que entienda”.
