Más vale tarde que nunca. La película data de 1986 pero acaba de estrenarse en España, aunque, como era de suponer, en un número muy limitado de salas. Sin duda se trata de un caso extraño pues, habiendo tenido éxito en Francia en el año de su estreno (que le llevó a ganar incluso los principales premios de la Academia de Cine Francés), lo último que cabía esperar es que, un cuarto de siglo después alguien haya decidido rescatar del ostracismo esta película sobre la vida de Santa Teresa de Lisieux.
He de reconocer que antes de verla apenas conocía unos pocos trazos de la vida de la santa. Por eso no he podido juzgar si refleja fielmente su historia. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzaba el metraje (por cierto, de menos de hora y media) la pregunta por la fidelidad fue desapareciendo al tiempo que comprobaba con agrado que lo que aparecía en la pantalla, aunque no fuese cierto desde el punto de vista histórico, merecía la pena ser visto.
Frente a otros títulos que versan sobre la vida religiosa como las recientes Visión o De dioses y hombres, sorprende de entrada la claridad que inunda prácticamente la totalidad de las escenas. Este empleo de la luz permite combatir, aunque sea atacando el inconsciente, la impresión de que la vida conventual es algo oscuro, triste y que constriñe, y que a menudo maneja el espectador despistado que sin conocer este mundillo se tope con la película. Y al igual que este de la fotografía los demás aspectos formales están medidos y sometidos a un criterio de sencillez estética que contribuye a reflejar la austeridad de la vida del convento.
Pero, dejando a un lado este tipo de cuestiones, podríamos señalar que su principal mérito reside en hacer ver que la santidad es una meta posible de alcanzar a través de la vivencia sencilla pero profunda de lo cotidiano. Así, nos encontramos con una Teresa cuyos sentimientos y vicisitudes no sobresalen por su carácter extraordinario: reza, come, trabaja y pasa tiempo en comunidad como sus demás hermanas; y al tiempo se divierte, se autocontrola, se entristece, se enfada y hasta duda. Sólo hay una cosa que la hace diferente al resto: su constante e incansable deseo de perfección.
Por estas razones Thérèse puede ser una excelente opción para una velada de cine en comunidad durante la Cuaresma. Que el ejemplo de los santos nos anime en nuestro camino de conversión.
