Los libros, esos amigos fieles
Se suele decir que el perro es el gran amigo del hombre. Y no lo dudo. Pero yo prefiero otros amigos. Me refiero a los libros. Ellos son los grandes amigos del hombre. Aunque, por el contrario, no hay muchos hombres que sean amigos de los libros. A decir verdad, se lee muy poco. Es muchísimo más el tiempo que se dedica a la TV (por ejemplo), que el que se dedica a un buen libro.
Yo estoy rodeado de “amigos”. Mis estanterías están repletas de libros, que es lo mismo que decir que están repletas de sabiduría: desde una Biblia hasta una novela, pasando por un libro de poesías, de historia, de formación en general. No faltan los diccionarios, los libros de literatura, de evasión, de temas variados. Unos de esos amigos son gordos y fuertes, otros delgaditos, unos con pastas llamativas, otros de apariencia más seria…pero todos tienen su sitio, todos cumplen su cometido para cada momento, para cada necesidad; todos enriquecen mi espíritu, me acompañan, me ilustran, me distraen, o me enseñan. Hay pocas cosas más valiosas que un libro (aunque no todos en la misma medida). En ellos encuentro el pensamiento de hombres y mujeres ilustres, a quienes solo conozco a través de ellos. Hay libros que, después de haber sido leídos, duermen un largo sueño en la estantería, pacientes, hasta que de nuevo me acuerdo de ellos porque los necesito. Otros están más a la mano, porque utilizo con frecuencia. Otros me sirven para hacer un regalo a personas queridas; son como embajadores de tu afecto por otros.
Los libros son verdaderos tesoros (no sólo por el precio que suelen tener); tesoros que te enriquecen.
Incluso es un buen amigo el periódico (libro de cada día y sólo para ese día) que te informa, te pone al día, te lleva lejos o cerca, según la noticia sea de aquí o de allí. Una de las primeras cosas que hago cada día (y con cierta avidez) es leer ese noticiario escrito en papel pobre, con tinta que mancha, pero que te trae la última novedad del mundo.
Suele decirse que los libros no se prestan, porque supone, generalmente, perderlos. Yo procuro no perderlos, pero sí que los presto.
Cuando leo un libro (si es de mi propiedad, no prestado) suelo ir subrayando aquellos párrafos o frases que más me gustan. Me parece que independientemente de la utilidad a la hora de encontrar más tarde lo que me gustó más, es una manera de manifestar a ese libro-amigo, que me agrada su compañía, que me sirven sus enseñanzas, que coincido con él en tal o cual apreciación. Termino con este párrafo prestado:
