Torre de marfil
Hablar o escribir sobre la Virgen María, Madre de Dios y nuestra Madre, no sólo es bueno, sino necesario. En las letanías que se rezan al final del rosario, aparece, aplicado a la Virgen, el nombre de “Torre de marfil” (Turris eburnea). Muchas veces, de niño y en la juventud, me pregunté qué significaba esa expresión aplicada a María. Y me imagino que más de uno de los que, todavía, rezan el rosario, se lo seguirá preguntando. ¿Por qué esta imagen aplicada a María?
La figura de la torre, además de sugerir la seguridad en la defensa de una ciudad, es el lugar elevado desde donde se divisa el mejor horizonte, y se ve mejor al que llega. Aplicada a María, indica la seguridad para el creyente, por una parte; y por otra, que María es la primera que vio llegar al “mensajero” que nos traía la salvación, Cristo. Por eso, el simbolismo de la torre hace mención, por un lado, a la fortaleza y a la resistencia; y por otro, al lugar de vigilancia desde donde se divisa mejor al Salvador. Porque a través de la Madre es más fácil llegar al Hijo.
Hay otro motivo bíblico para llamar a la Virgen “torre de marfil”. Esta expresión aparece en el Cantar de los Cantares: “Es tu cuello como torre de marfil”. Este versículo se aplica, también, a la Virgen María porque la torre, al ser inexpugnable, simboliza también la virginidad del corazón. Y, además, con el marfil, trabajado por los artífices, se elaboran objetos muy preciados. ¿Quién más preciado y apreciado que María?
La blancura del marfil no lastima la vista como la blancura de la nieve, que hiere los ojos; pero es agradable y tranquila como la blancura de la lana, del armiño o de una flor; es símbolo del alma limpia de culpa, discreta, amable, indulgente, que sabe compadecer y tolerar porque es humilde y ama a los pecadores. La verdadera alma limpia es la que en el instante en que ve las miserias ajenas, sin mancharse con ellas, se compadece para sanarlas.
También en las letanías lauretanas se le llama a María: Torre de David (turris davídica). ¿Por qué?
La Torre de David era una construcción fuerte y muy hermosa que se elevaba sobre la cumbre de un monte entre dos profundas vertientes. Esta Torre fue mandada construir por el Rey David para defensa de la ciudad de Jerusalén. Hermosa imagen de María Santísima que se eleva sublime sobre la cumbre de toda belleza y perfección, para defensa de la santa Iglesia de Dios, la nueva Jerusalén.
Por otra parte, en el antiguo concepto de las obras de defensa, la torre debía tener tres cualidades principales: Belleza, porque servía de ornamento y era expresión del genio artístico. Fortaleza, que la hiciera resistente a todo asalto enemigo y Elevación para que se ensanchara y se extendiera el campo de observación. Y María, después de su hijo es la que más bellas virtudes acumula, y es la expresión del mayor genio artístico, que es Dios. María es también la que con mayor fortaleza vivió la aventura de su Hijo, y estuvo, fuerte y entera, al pie de la cruz. Y Elevación, ¿quién se ha elevado más alta junto a Dios?
Cuando en el rezo del rosario lleguemos a estas dos expresiones: Torre de marfil y Torre de David, tengamos en cuenta por qué lo aplicamos, con todo derecho, a María.
