Hablemos de la muerte
(Aunque no sea de buen gusto)
El P.General de la Congregación de los Sagrados Corazones, Javier Álvarez Osorio, ha enviado a los religiosos de la misma, un escrito, en el que habla con toda naturalidad y sentido cristiano, de la muerte, con motivo del mes de Noviembre dedicado a los difuntos. Evito cualquier comentario personal, y transcribo una parte de su escrito. Nos puede ayudar a todos a reflexionar sobre el momento más trascendental de la vida.
“Estamos en el mes de noviembre, que se inicia con la fiesta de Todos los Santos y con el día de oración por los difuntos. Hablemos, pues, de la muerte. De nuestra muerte. Porque todos vamos a morir. No es frecuente oír hablar de la muerte. Es un tema que se evita. Los noticieros y las películas muestran la muerte de otros como espectáculo, pero nos resulta embarazoso hablar de la nuestra. Una cierta cultura predominante insta a camuflar los signos precursores de la muerte. Se diría que el valor más codiciado es el de mantenerse joven y sano. Dicen que el funcionamiento de la sociedad de consumo se basa justamente en esta alergia a enfrentar la realidad ineluctable de la muerte.
Con los enfermos y ancianos, rara vez se habla de la muerte. Se escamotea con fórmulas estereotipadas, tan bienintencionadas como vacías: “todo irá bien”, “ya verás cómo te repones”, “la esperanza es lo último que se pierde”, etc. Silenciamos lo evidente, lo inevitable, y dejamos al moribundo abandonado a una angustia que no encuentra interlocutor con quien desahogarse.
En las conversaciones normales, parece de mal gusto sacar a relucir la muerte. Es un tema aguafiestas, que se esquiva generalmente con alguna broma de humor fácil. La muerte nos da miedo. La muerte proclama la caducidad de nuestra vida y la vanidad de tantos esfuerzos con los que pretendemos justificarnos. La muerte asusta por el cortejo de dolor, limitaciones y soledades que la acompaña.
La muerte no es solo un acontecimiento lejano en un futuro incierto. La muerte es una realidad cotidiana. De hecho, nos acompaña desde el mismo momento en que nacemos. A medida que pasa el tiempo, la vamos sintiendo más y más presente. Nosotros, creyentes, no podemos pensar en la muerte sin referirnos a la fe. Como tampoco podemos testimoniar de nuestra fe sin hablar de la muerte.
¿Por qué afanarse en prolongar nuestros días? ¿No es acaso más estimulante y consolador reconocer que somos peregrinos en esta tierra? Nuestra vida es un viaje al final del cual Dios nos espera para abrazarnos y acogernos en su casa, que es nuestra verdadera patria y nuestro verdadero hogar. Ante esa perspectiva, ¿qué más da vida larga que vida corta?
Llegar al final de la vida con la serenidad de la fe y con la humildad del discípulo es el más alto testimonio rendido a la misericordia de Dios, que será la que en definitiva nos acoja, nos juzgue y nos salve.
En un autobús de Colombia, el chófer había puesto una imagen de Jesús en la parte superior del parabrisas, con una frase que decía: “Si éste es mi último viaje…que sea hacia ti”. En cada momento de la vida, vamos hacia el Señor. No sabemos ni el día ni la hora. Lo que sí sabemos es que a medida que se aproxima la muerte, más nos acercamos a Él. Por eso, “no se turbe vuestro corazón, tened fe en Dios y tened fe en mí… Voy a prepararos un sitio” (Jn 14,1-2).”
