¿Arte o personas?
¿Qué es más importante, un objeto de arte (escultura, pintura, orfebrería, etc.), o una persona de carne y hueso, con alma.
En la teoría no creo que haya ninguna voz discordante en que la persona es mucho más valiosa e importante. Pero ¿lo es también en la práctica? Francamente, no. Cuidamos muy bien los tesoros artísticos, pero no importa que las personas mueran, desaparezcan por inanición, por hambre.
Al escritor francés Jean Cocteau, en una visita al Museo del Prado, un periodista le preguntó: ¿Qué salvaría del Prado ante un incendio?. Jean Cocteau tuvo una contestación realmente provocadora: Yo salvaría el fuego.
Yo pregunto a la Iglesia, a los políticos, a los poderosos, al mundo en general: ¿qué estáis dispuestos a salvar antes, las obras de arte o las personas? Y no necesito la respuesta porque no los creo. Porque sé que dirían las personas, pero hacen lo contrario.
Hay una encíclica de Juan Pablo II que dice que, en tiempos de crisis, todos los objetos de culto valiosos que tiene la Iglesia deben enajenarse para el servicio de las víctimas. Y lo dice como una obligación. En cuestiones de culto, la Iglesia española tiene muchas riquezas.
Pero Dios no necesita, ni quiero excesos en el lujo y exhibición de riquezas en su culto, por bonito que sea o por muchas perlas que tenga una custodia (por ejemplo).
En cambio, que esto se pudiera poner al servicio de los pobres y que repercutiera en los que pasan el día sin comer, sí sería un gran acto de culto a Dios. Además de un gran gesto. Un portillo por donde entraría un aire fresco que podría hacer reventar muchas cosas.
No creo que se haya hecho mucho caso a esa invitación del Papa, de deshacerse de esas riquezas, a favor de los más necesitados. Por otra parte, suelen esgrimirse muchos argumentos a favor de no vender las obras de arte, por aquello de que son un tesoro invendible, un patrimonio de la humanidad.
Pero desengañémonos; no todas las obras son invendibles. La mayoría de las cosas que se guardan, como verdaderos tesoros, en las sacristías-museos de iglesias y catedrales, se pueden vender. Pero, por lo visto, vale más un cáliz de oro, o una custodia con piedras preciosas, que una persona. Las obras de arte podrían seguir siendo patrimonio de la humanidad, pero siendo exhibidas en otros museos (v.g. El Prado, el Louvre, el Reina Sofía, el National Gallery, etc…) Y miles de personas cada día se librarían de la muerte.
Me llama la atención y me duele la gran insensibilidad que existe ante la muerte diaria de miles de personas, cuando es cuestión de dinero. Dinero que se podría adquirir más fácilmente de lo que se piensa. ¡Cuántos ricachones, cuántos anticuarios, cuántas instituciones, estarían dispuestos a comprar las obras de arte, aburridas en las vitrinas! Y cuántas personas podrían empezar a comer, evitándolas morir de hambre.

A veces me pregunto ¿nadie de los que tienen la posibilidad de dar un paso firme adelante en estas y otras cosas, lo ve? ¿Nadie se atreve a dar ese paso necesario?¿Tan difícil es verlo? Y si lo ven, prefieren aferrarse a la cobardía de no abordarlo, antes que correr el riesgo de ser incomprendidos por algunos o criticados por otros.
Lo verían si las víctimas fueran sus allegados. Pero no es así, y la pobreza y el hambre no son “su problema”: consideran que no lo han provocado y que bastante hacen dando limosna.
Y sin embargo… “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento o sediento, o como forastero, o necesitado de ropa, o enfermo, o en la cárcel, y no te ayudamos?” Él les responderá: “Os aseguro que todo lo que no hicisteis por el más pequeño de mis hermanos, tampoco lo hicisteis por mí.” (Mt 25, 44-45)
Ruth, ¡que razón llevas al decir que “si fueran sus allegados”, seguro que lo verían. De donde deducimos que eso de la fraternidad, el ser hermanos, es más una teoría que una práctica. ¡Desgraciadamente!
