Autonomía de la ciencia
La Biblia afirma que Josué mandó parar el sol, porque no le daba tiempo a conquistar la ciudad de Jericó. Y el sol se paró casi un día entero.
Efectivamente, en el libro de Josué se dice que: “El sol se detuvo sobre Gabaón”.
Es un pasaje importante de la Sagrada Escritura, porque en el siglo XVII dio motivo de una controversia muy fuerte, entre la Iglesia y Galileo. La Iglesia mantenía lo afirmado en la Biblia (a causa de una mala interpretación de la misma), mientras que Galileo afirmaba que el sol no se movía (por tanto no se le podía parar) porque es el centro de nuestro sistema solar, y es la tierra la que se mueve. Como consecuencia, Galileo fue condenado por la Iglesia. Hoy día ha sido reconocida su verdad, y él ha sido reintegrado a la Iglesia.
El pasaje relata que cinco reyes amorreos sitiaron Gabaón, debido a que los gabaonitas habían hecho pacto con Israel. A cuenta de este pacto, los gabaonitas llamaron a Josué para que los defendiera.
Dios dijo a Josué: “no los temas, porque los he puesto en tus manos y ninguno de ellos te podrá resistir” (Jos. 10,8). Este fue el día en que Josué pidió a Yawé (Dios) a la vista de todo Israel que se detuviera el sol. Necesitaba más tiempo de luz del día, para terminar de liquidar a todos los enemigos. Y Dios detuvo el sol en Gabaón. El sol se detuvo en medio del cielo, y así permaneció casi un día.
Naturalmente, Galileo llevaba razón; y es falso que el sol se parara, porque el sol no se mueve.
Es una buena prueba de que la Biblia (sobre todo el A.T. no se puede aceptar entendiéndolo literalmente (como dicen, por ejemplo, los Testigos de Jehová). Necesita interpretación.
La Iglesia no puede negar la ciencia, ni tratar de corregirla, porque no es de su competencia.
