Contestó: “Puede que uno no sea capaz de describir todo lo que vea, y hay cosas que uno puede describir que puede no haber visto en verdad. Los ojos que ven no pueden hablar y la boca que habla no puede ver. Esa es la verdad”.
En estas situaciones difíciles, acaso se pueda adoptar este tipo de política. No se debe decir una falsedad, pero puede que uno tampoco pueda decir lisa y llanamente la verdad. Es muy posible que surjan circunstancias difíciles como ésta, y uno debe cuidar de escapar a ellas sin proferir mentiras. Si no se puede decir la verdad, se puede guardar silencio, en lugar de recurrir a una mentira.
Santo Tomás Moro fue un gran defensor de la verdad. Nunca la ocultó. Y decir la verdad le llevó a ser ejecutado. Ya en el patíbulo, para la ejecución, Santo Tomás le dijo a la gente allí congregada que el moría como “El buen servidor del rey, pero primero era Dios” (“the King’s good servant-but God’s first”). Nos recuerda las palabras de Jesús: “Al Cesar lo que es del Cesar y a Dios lo que es de Dios.” Fue decapitado el 6 de julio de 1535. Juan Pablo II, dijo de él: “El hombre no se puede separar de Dios, ni la política de la moral. Ésta es la luz que iluminó la conciencia de Santo Tomás Moro y el horizonte a donde le llevó su pasión por la verdad”. La Iglesia no tiene que tener miedo a decir la verdad, toda la verdad. Si lo hace, será más creíble, porque será señal de sinceridad y de honradez.
