Nunca se valió del engaño para ganar discípulos, antes bien, a quien pretendía seguirle, le dejaba las cosas muy claras, para que no se llevase a engaño. Al joven rico, le dice: “si quieres seguirme, vende lo que tienes y dáselo a os pobres, después me sigues”. A otros que intentan ser sus discípulos, les dice: “No tengo donde reclinar la cabeza. Los pájaros tienen nidos y las zorras madrigueras, pero tengo donde pasar la noche”. Jesús no era un engañador. Y todo el que quisiera formar parte de sus discípulos debía saber muy bien a qué clase de retos se exponía.
El texto del evangelio, arriba citado, no deja lugar a engaño. Da la impresión de que Jesús trataba de asustar a los posibles seguidores, pues sus palabras son un tanto desconcertante.
Naturalmente, esas palabras hay que saberlas interpretar. En primer lugar hay que imaginarse el tono de las palabras de Jesús, tan amable y comprensivo siempre. En segundo lugar, las frases, son más bien, exageradas, para indicar que el camino de seguimiento de Jesús no es fácil. Es exigente. Pero las palabras concretas, no hay que tomarlas en serio, es decir, al pie de la letra.
Nadie puede seguir a Jesús por motivos bastardos, ni ignorando aquello a lo que se compromete.
