En el número de agosto-septiembre de la revista 21, aparece este texto de Mª Ángeles Fernández, directora y presentadora de los programas “Últimas preguntas” y “Frontera” de TVE y RNE respectivamente. En este texto, viaja a sus recuerdos de infancia sobre Damián y nos invita a investigar “un mundo del que aún nos queda bastante por descubrir, el del Amor”.

 El primer contacto que tuve con la vida de Damián se debió a la curiosidad propia de la infancia que me llevaba a hojear con avidez la revista Reinado Social que puntualmente recibía mi familia, aunque apenas podía entenderla. Treinta años después, desde el punto de vista intelectual, tampoco puedo comprender por qué un hombre es capaz de entregarse de esa manera a los más pobres, haciéndose uno más entre ellos. Pero treinta años después, la fe me ha abierto los ojos y puedo dejarme admirar por esas razones que sólo el corazón comprende: el amor a Dios y el amor a los hombres de uno como nosotros, el padre Damián, el de Molokai. Aquel que tomó la nave de su destino dejándose llevar en confianza por el timón incierto de Dios. Aquel que, también hoy, nos sigue limpiando los ojos, a veces más ciegos que los de los leprosos por los que entregó su vida, para enseñarnos un mundo del que aún nos queda bastante por descubrir, el del Amor.
