La esperanza, virtud para esta vida
Podríamos definir la Esperanza como la virtud teologal, por la cual deseamos y esperamos de Dios, con firme confianza, la vida eterna y las gracias para merecerla, porque Dios nos lo ha prometido. Naturalmente, la virtud de la esperanza supone tener Fe. Porque ahí vuelve a entrar en juego lo que decíamos el día anterior sobre “fiarse”, porque es un componente o exigencia de la fe. Porque nos fiamos de Dios, esperamos que realice en nosotros sus promesas.
Es una virtud “perecedera”. Quiero decir que no permanecerá para siempre. Es necesaria sólo mientras estamos en esta vida. En la otra desaparecerá, como desaparecerá la fe. Sólo permanecerá por toda la eternidad la caridad, el amor. La fe desaparece porque cuando veamos a Dios “cara a cara”, no la necesitaremos, porque la suplirá la evidencia. Si vemos, no creemos. Sólo creemos cuando no vemos.
La esperanza tampoco tendrá sentido en la otra vida, porque ya habremos alcanzado el objeto esperado. Ya no será “esperanza” de poseer, sino “posesión” lograda.
Además de la gran esperanza en el encuentro definitivo con el Señor, tras el final de esta vida, que es el objeto fundamental de la virtud de la esperanza, hay otras cosas que son también objetos de esperanza: esperamos que Dios escuche nuestra oración; que podemos ir logrando la santidad a que somos convocados por Él; esperamos que Dios nos ayude en nuestros trabajos apostólicos, etc… Todo eso, y otras cosas más son objetos de esperanza.
Existen, también, la fe y la esperanza humanas, que no tienen nada que ver con la virtud teologal, que hace referencia a Dios. Podemos tener fe o creer en personas que nos dan garantías suficientes para fiarnos de ellas; así como podemos esperar, igualmente, en personas o acontecimientos normales de la vida. Pero, repito, eso nada tiene que ver con las esperanza como virtud teologal. No está mal, y posiblemente sea necesario, el examinar cómo andamos de esperanza. Me he encontrado, alguna vez, con personas que se dicen creyentes, y que no creen en la otra vida, o tienen grandes dudas sobre ella.
No creo que pueda considerarse como cristiano a alguien que no cree en la vida eterna. Lo que sí es posible es la duda, más que sobre la existencia, sobre el modo o el cómo. Porque realmente de esto último no sabemos prácticamente nada. Y ahí sí se pueden albergar las dudas, que no son falta de fe, ni falta de esperanza.
A veces nos fiamos más de nuestros sentidos, de nuestra inteligencia, de nuestro saber, que de Aquel que nos ha dado los sentidos, que nos ha proporcionado la luz de la inteligencia y es el que tiene todo el saber. Pero somos así; nos fiamos más de nosotros mismos, sabiendo que somos tan limitados en el saber y el conocer.
Hay que ser lo suficientemente humildes y sencillos, para creer y esperar en Dios, con más fuerza y más seguridad que en nosotros mismos. Termino con esta acertada frase del famoso escritor indio, Rabindranath Tagore:”Cada criatura, al nacer, nos trae el mensaje de que Dios todavía no pierde la esperanza en los hombres”. Mi pregunta es: ¿perderemos los hombres la esperanza en Dios?»
