“La humildad es la verdad“, solía decir Santa Teresa de Ávila.
El humilde ve las cosas como son, lo bueno como bueno, lo malo como malo. En la medida en que un hombre es más humilde crece una visión más correcta de la Verdad. Porque la humildad perfecta es Jesús.
Jesús es la humildad encarnada. Siendo Dios, vivió 30 de sus 33 años en vida oculta, ordinaria, tenido por uno de tantos. Lo extraordinario fue la perfección en que vivió lo ordinario. También sus 3 años de vida pública son perfecta humildad. En todo hacía, como siempre, la voluntad de su Padre. Nunca buscó llamar la atención sobre sí mismo, sino dar gloria al Padre. Al final murió en la Cruz. Nos dijo: “Aprended de mi que soy manso y humilde de corazón”. Jesús repara el pecado del hombre; y el pecado siempre es rebeldía ante Dios, y mentira. Ejemplo os he dado -dice el Señor después de lavarles los pies a sus discípulos – para que como yo he hecho con vosotros, así hagáis vosotros ( Jn 13, 15). Nos deja una suprema lección para que entendamos que si no somos humildes, si no estamos dispuestos a servir, no podemos seguir al Maestro, y no vivimos la Verdad..
El Señor nos invita a seguirle y a imitarle, y nos deja una regla sencilla, pero exacta, para vivir la caridad con humildad y espíritu de servicio: “Todo lo que queráis que hagan los hombres con vosotros, hacedlo también vosotros con ellos” (Mt 7, 12). La experiencia de lo que me agrada o me molesta, de lo que me ayuda o me hace daño, es una buena norma de aquello que debo hacer o evitar en el trato con los demás.
Me he encontrado, a lo largo de mi vida, bastantes personas, que me han llamado mucho la atención, porque en un mundo de tanto engaño y tanta mentira, nunca, jamás, han dicho una mentira. Gente que siempre va con la verdad por delante, aunque, a veces, decir la verdad, les perjudique. Ni siquiera se permiten esa mentira, que solemos llamar “piadosa”, porque no hace daño a nadie. Son personas íntegras, honestas y veraces.
Ya me gustaría que en la Iglesia se hubiera dicho siempre la verdad, como reflejo del que es la Verdad; que en la Iglesia se dijese la verdad, aún a costa de no tener que seguir mintiendo para seguir defendiendo una equivocación. Reconocer los errores es muy saludable, y una prueba de buena salud.
“En el pensamiento teresiano, «andar en verdad ante Dios, ante los demás y ante nosotros mismos» es el síntoma de una personalidad sana. Y es la actitud que nos permite conocernos, aceptarnos y conquistar nuestro mejor yo. Para evitar la tentación de creernos más de lo que somos (soberbia) o acentuar tanto nuestra debilidad (pusilanimidad), la Santa nos previene atinadamente: «Esta es la verdadera verdad: conocer cada uno lo que puede y lo que Dios puede en él» (Rel.28) Y nos anticipa que la prueba, la dificultad o la crisis ponen de manifiesto la verdad: «Pruébanos Tú Señor que sabes las verdades para que nos conozcamos» (M 3, 1,9). Por último, describe: «Quienes de veras aman a Dios no aman sino verdades y cosas dignas de amar» . Se oponen a la verdad: la mentira, la falsedad, el engaño-apariencia, la hipocresía. Teresa sabe que sólo “la verdad nos hará libres” y que una tarea humana tan liberadora como dolorosa es poner la vida en verdad. Experimentar nuestro yo, encontrarnos con nosotros mismos descubriendo nuestras posibilidades y limitaciones; y todo, desde el espejo de Dios, de su mirada amorosa. Este es el espejo teresiano. La humildad y la esperanza son actitudes humanas fundamentales para caminar en la verdad”.
Santa Teresa amonestaba a una de sus monjas, porque en una de sus cartas, firmaba “sor estiércol”, como señal de humildad. Hay que buscar la verdad, y entonces, seremos humildes.
