¡Ayúdanos a superar barreras!
Con motivo de la canonización del P. Damián, ha habido una oración 
que me ha interpelado especialmente. Fue la que, delante de la Eucaristía, pronunció nuestro Superior General en la vigilia de oración en Santa Maria sopra Minerva, la noche previa a la canonización. Creo que es una oración para rezarla, para meditarla… para darle vueltas y dejar que nos inspire. Es un poco larga para un blog, pero creo que merece la pena.
Señor, en esta noche de vigilia y de oración, contemplando el sacramento de tu amor misericordioso y entregado, te damos gracias.
Te damos gracias, Jesús crucificado, porque has soportado nuestros sufrimientos y has aguantado nuestros dolores. Porque tus heridas nos han curado. Porque cargas con nosotros y justificas a todos, a la gran multitud, a la humanidad entera.
Te damos gracias por Damián. En él has realizado una obra maestra de tu Espíritu. Damián, que expuso su vida a la muerte, que escogió sus amigos entre los más abandonados, y supo amarlos hasta el extremo. Y todo eso, por ti, por tu evangelio de amor loco y desmedido.
Gracias, Cristo resucitado, vencedor de la muerte, recompensa de los que en ti esperan. Gracias porque Damián no es un “ilustre difunto”, o un héroe admirable del pasado. No. Damián está vivo en tu vida, y ahora más que nunca forma parte de la oración de tu Iglesia, esa oración esperanzada y suplicante que sin cesar pide que venga a nosotros tu Reino, Reino de paz y justicia, Reino de vida y verdad.
Gracias, Jesús, por la extraña felicidad con que inundaste el corazón de Damián. La felicidad de un hombre libre que nada defiende para sí mismo. La felicidad que ningún dolor, ni enfermedad, ni desprecio, ni pobreza, ni siquiera la muerte, pueden arrebatar. La felicidad del pecador que se sabe amado y perdonado. La felicidad del que ama con ternura entrañable a quienes nada pueden darle a cambio. La felicidad del misionero que habla de ti, que despierta en otros la sed de tu amor, que consuela con el bálsamo de tu Gracia. La felicidad de quien consume sus defectos y faltas en el fuego ardiente de la caridad y del servicio. Gracias, Cristo misericordioso y amigo, porque no dejaste a Damián solo sino que lo llevaste de la mano hasta el final. Sólo de ti, Señor, vienen la alegría verdadera y la redención copiosa.
Mira, Señor, a los que nos reunimos frente a ti y te adoramos. Mira nuestra pequeñez y nuestra torpeza y danos tu alegría. Somos muchos, mañana seremos más, de lugares muy diversos, de razas y culturas diferentes. Somos una pequeña muestra de una humanidad hermosa y sufriente, hermanada y también dividida, solidaria y también enfrentada. ¡Qué gozada sabernos hermanos y hermanas! Pero también ¡cuánto nos hacemos sufrir unos a otros con nuestro orgullo, nuestra indiferencia, nuestras oscuridades, nuestros odios! ¡Cuánto dolor y miseria en esta tierra! ¡Qué terrible resuena el grito de angustia de las masas incontables de los pequeños de este mundo despreciados, masacrados, excluidos, pisoteados en su más elemental dignidad…! Enséñanos a amar como Damián amó; a mirarnos unos a otros con bondad de corazón; a superar barreras como Damián las superó: barreras de la distancia, de la raza, de la religión, de la lengua, de la repulsión, del miedo, del resentimiento… Enséñanos a ser libres y a comprometernos sin guardarnos las espaldas. Ayúdanos a amar como tú amas.
Gracias, Señor Jesús, por tu corazón herido, amante, redentor. Gracias por el corazón de María, obediente, discípula, madre. Gracias por esos Sagrados Corazones que hicieron de Damián un hermano universal, un modelo de humanidad, el apóstol de los enfermos de lepra, héroe de la caridad, inspiración para todo ser humano que sienta la llamada a servir a los excluidos y olvidados, gloria de la Iglesia entera, reflejo de la santidad amorosa de Dios entre nosotros.
Tú que pasaste por el mundo haciendo el bien, fecunda nuestra alegría para que florezca en frutos de bondad, de justicia y de compasión para gloria de Dios Padre.
