Quien se acerque, hoy, a la famosa isla de Molokai, no podrá imaginarse el infierno que supuso durante largos años. Cuando el Padre Damián (hoy santo) desembarcó en la isla, toda ella era una gran hospital, sin médicos, ni enfermeras… Sólo enfermos, abandonados a su suerte, con la enfermedad más terrible en aquel tiempo: la lepra.
Molokai, una isla casi desconocida, perdida en el océano Pacífico, que empezó a ser tristemente famosa por ser la fosa donde iban a morir los cuerpos de los afectados por la terrible enfermedad; y con los cuerpos, también las ilusiones, los proyectos y la alegría de tantas gentes. También empezó a ser gratamente famosa, porque un misionero de los ss.cc. fue capaz de renunciar a muchas cosas (incluida su salud) para estar cerca de los más olvidados.
Aquel infierno, poco a poco se fue trasformando, se fue haciendo más llevadero, dentro de los problemas y dificultades, por la acción de Damián. Él también moriría comido por la lepra. Le gustaba decir aquella ya conocida frase:”nosotros, los leprosos”. Sin darse cuenta, con ella expresaba su cercanía a aquella gente, su entrega desinteresada, su compromiso bien cumplido, su elección desde el primer momento de permanecer junto a ellos a costa de lo que fuere. Y fue a costa de su vida.
Gracias a Damián y a la obra que él hizo y dejó en marcha, la lepra fue desapareciendo, quedando un pequeño reducto, bien atendido médicamente.
Y hoy se ha convertido en una isla mágica para el turismo, pasando de “isla maldita” a “lugar privilegiado de turismo”.
Pero el hecho de ser un lugar turístico, no ha sido capaz de borrar el recuerdo del héroe de Molokai, cuya fama se extendió por el mundo entero, y allí permanece de manera especial.
Ojalá que todos los infiernos que tenemos, hoy día, en el mundo, fuesen convirtiéndose en lugares de convivencia, de vida y bienestar.
