“SER SABIO ES DESEAR APRENDER A VIVIR”
Alange es un lugar de novela con castillo, balneario romano, iglesia mudéjar recién restaurada y un pantano inmenso, a pocos kilómetros de Mérida. Allí vive este sacerdote, galardonado con la Medalla de Extremadura y el Premio Lara, cuya profesión es la de cura de pueblo que escribe. Hemos tenido la suerte de descubrir a la persona que hay detrás del famoso novelista, quien opta por ser feliz con sus dos mil vecinos, encantados con los éxitos literarios de su párroco.
Antes de ser sacerdote, fuiste juez. Indícanos algunas diferencias entre la justicia de Dios y la de los hombres.
Tienen muy poco que ver, porque la justicia de los hombres y la labor de un juez consiste en aplicar las leyes. Y la justicia de Dios es la misericordia.
¿Cómo descubriste tu vocación sacerdotal?
Es muy difícil explicarlo, porque necesitaría un relato amplísimo. Cuando se contesta a esa pregunta se cae en simplificaciones y las simplificaciones son acudir a la idea de la vocación que en realidad es una forma de expresar muchas cosas. Creo, efectivamente, en la llamada, pero aparte existe un proceso histórico personal determinado, que es lo que configura después lo que realmente vas a ser.
(En estos momentos un grupo de jóvenes que están por la casa, se despiden de su párroco).
¿Qué te motivó pasar de ser buen lector a escritor?
Es un transcurso lógico, que guarda relación con que hay un determinado momento en que también te gustaría escribir lo que a ti te gustaría leer. En los libros de un autor están todas sus lecturas y a eso se suma todas sus inquietudes literarias.
Descríbenos cómo es el proceso creador de tus obras.
Hay una parte primero de lecturas, de creación de un marco histórico-cronológico, que es lo que estoy haciendo ahora con la próxima novela. También un período de configuración de la idea, es decir, darle forma, tener claro qué es lo que quieres decir, qué es lo que quieres contar. Después llega un período de disciplina en el cual te sientas y te pones a escribir, porque es necesario. La escritura sin trabajo no puede ser. No basta sólo la inspiración.
Junto a la recreación de la época histórica en la que están inspiradas tus novelas, describiendo al detalle los ambientes, personajes y situaciones, muestras un estudio minucioso de la psicología de los personajes, ¿no es así?
Sí. Y, además, cada vez más. Llega un determinado momento en que lo que más te va interesando es que sean personajes creíbles y que tengan una personalidad, que no resulten, por decirlo de algún modo, desconcertantes tampoco previsibles, que tengan toda la grandeza que posee la creación.
¿Qué has pretendido con tu nueva novela Los milagros del vino (Ed. Planeta)?
Tenía una pretensión ambiciosa que era crear una metáfora en la cual insertar algo que sucedió de verdad, pero que está contado solamente en los libros de teología y de historia. Y es que el cristianismo, para poder difundirse por el Mediterráneo, y con ello al mundo entero, necesitó de los griegos y de lo que significan los griegos. Podalirio representa en sí mismo el mundo griego, que es el eslabón necesario en la cadena de transmisión del cristianismo.
Es la novela más explícitamente religiosa de las diez que has escrito hasta ahora.
Sí, sobre todo, la segunda parte. Aunque aquí no está sólo el fenómeno religioso cristiano, está el fenómeno religioso en una mayor amplitud.
¿Con cuál de los personajes de tus novelas te quedarías?
Me gusta mucho Podalirio porque es un hombre sabio. Ser sabio no es adquirir conocimientos sino desear aprender a vivir. Eso es la sabiduría.
¿Vas a aparcar la novela histórica y mirar más hacia el hoy?
Voy a mirar hacia el hoy pero no voy a aparcar la novela histórica. Alternaré las dos cosas. Lo que no me gustaría es que me encasillaran sólo como un autor de novela histórica. De la novela en tiempo actual estoy dándole vueltas a ver. Voy a hacer algo urbano. En cuanto a la próxima novela histórica se va a desenvolver en el siglo IX. Tendrá que ver, una vez más, con los mozárabes.
Valóranos la relación entre la Iglesia y la cultura.
La cultura de Occidente no se puede explicar sin la cultura cristiana. Cristianismo y cultura van indisolublemente unidos, hasta el punto de que hablamos de cultura cristiana. Este siglo y los venideros deben seguir siendo cristianos y, al mismo tiempo, teniendo cultura cristiana. Para eso la Iglesia tiene, como ha tenido siempre, un buen trabajo.
Desde tu perspectiva, ¿qué desafíos se despliegan a la Iglesia española en el presente?
Muchísimos, como a la Iglesia del mundo. Hay que reconfigurar la jerarquía, dar más participación al pueblo, replantearse el papel de la mujer en la Iglesia y, sobre todo, en la jerarquía de la Iglesia, democratizar las instituciones, replantearse la elección de los obispos y el celibato. Lo que todo el mundo sabemos.
Sacerdote y escritor. ¿Cómo se compagina esta doble vocación?
Con cierta dificultad antes. Y ahora ya no porque, como todo, se aprende a vivir. He tenido que integrar las dos vocaciones. Al final las he integrado y, ¿por qué no?
Llevar vendidos más de un millón de ejemplares, ¿qué te hace sentir?
Mucha satisfacción, porque escribimos para que nos lean. Y eso supone que me han leído más de un millón de personas. Aparte, una gran responsabilidad, porque no les puedo defraudar.
De tu ministerio como párroco, ¿qué es lo que más sueles cuidar?
Son muchas cosas. Es muy importante tener una comunidad, que la parroquia acabe dándose cuenta de que en ella caben todos: personas con diversas ideologías y edades, con diversos ministerios, porque no todo el mundo se puede implicar en ella al mismo nivel. Tienes personas que están jubiladas o que no trabajan y que te pueden prestar más tiempo a lo que las personas que aquí trabajan. La hostelería es un trabajo muy sacrificado. Tú no puedes ponerles reuniones a las nueve de la noche, porque llegan a casa y vienen cansados. Y muchos de ellos están dando la cena en los hoteles, atendiendo los bares o de servicio en el balneario. Es crear una comunidad y estar atento a sus necesidades. Hay que cuidar la infraestructura, la liturgia, la religiosidad popular, que es del pueblo, una manifestación de sus sentimientos que es muy válida y se pueden sacar cosas muy buenas de ella. Cuidar la caridad, la relación entre las personas y la educación de los jóvenes.
Ofrécenos tu análisis sobre la realidad de nuestro país en la actualidad.
El momento, sin llegar a ser oscuro, no es demasiado luminoso. Creo que ha habido un sector del poder político muy radical, un sector político en el gobierno que ha querido hacer transformaciones bruscas que han exasperado a la población. Veo mucha hipocresía en los políticos, intentado crear una nueva moral, sin embargo, no sujetándose ellos a las reglas más esenciales. He visto nefasto el último gobierno. La política española se tiene que renovar, tiene que ser más conciliadora. No hay que crear ficciones políticas y someter a los ciudadanos a pruebas ficticias que, en realidad, no les afectan en nada, como por ejemplo el Estatuto de Cataluña que es una cosa absurda en sí misma. Y otros muchos problemas que crean. Hay que desjudicializar la sociedad y la política. Debería surgir algún partido o movimiento popular que permitiera que hubiera otras fuerzas integradas, que no sean solamente los dos partidos en pugna, el bipartidismo. Se ha de renovar y estudiar a fondo el sistema de enseñanza que es malo. También preocuparse de los jóvenes y erradicar algunas conductas que veo absolutamente perniciosas, como son por ejemplo el botellón. Existe alguna tolerancia con cosas que no son nada beneficiosas. Hemos de reconstruir una reeducación de la sociedad en algún sentido. Hay que ponerle reglas a la televisión, que se cumplan al final los pactos y los acuerdos a los cuales llegaron todos los grandes partidos.
Háblanos de tus escritores favoritos.
Soy muy lector de los clásicos del Siglo de Oro. No solamente me refiero a las grandes novelas del Siglo de Oro, sino que leo anónimos del siglo XVI, crónicas… (Me señala encima de su mesa las Crónicas de Indias). Son numerosos escritos, muchos no son conocidos, pero en ellos está toda la riqueza de nuestro lenguaje. Después soy muy lector de los rusos. Los rusos forman parte de mi vida, están por todos lados. A mí me encanta Chéjov. Me gusta muchísimo. Y Dostoievski. Y, luego, a mí me parece que el mejor escritor en lengua castellana contemporánea es Miguel Delibes, sin lugar a dudas, por la forma de escribir sencilla, no compleja. Lo realmente difícil es escribir sencillo, no enrevesado.
¿Y tus santos favoritos?
Todo el mundo tiene un santo admirado “particular”. Admiro a santa Teresa y me gusta mucho. Miras por la casa y en todos los sitios hay algo. Tengo sus lemas, sus frases, su obra. Releeo los epistolarios porque es donde aparece la santa más sincera. Me gusta también la figura de san Jorge, porque es la lucha permanente del hombre frente al bien y el mal, la verdad frente a la mentira, la luz frente a la oscuridad. Yo creo que es muy cristiano todo eso.
¿Veremos tus novelas en el cine?
Estamos en ello. Algunos proyectos los he rechazado, a otros les he dicho que sí. Ahora están pendientes de que se aprueben definitivamente. Las que más cerca están son El Cautivo, La sublime puerta y El Caballero de Alcántara en una serie. Vamos a ver qué pasa.

Me parece una revista necesaria, actual, donde una familia cristiana o un cristiano puede encontrar una información sustanciosa y plural, al mismo tiempo impregnada por el humanismo cristiano y por la cultura cristiana.
Una doble vida ejemplar
Sánchez Adalid ha heredado de su padre la pasión por la lectura, que le hizo conocer durante su juventud obras maestras del pensamiento y de la literatura universal. Ejercía como juez precoz, a sus 23 años, en su pueblo natal, Villanueva de la Serena. Descubrió su vocación al sacerdocio y se puso en contacto con su obispo. Su ejemplo estimuló la vocación sacerdotal de sus dos mejores amigos, ambos sacerdotes de la diócesis de Badajoz. Amante de Extremadura, culto, acogedor, deportista y apasionado de la naturaleza, ha convertido Alange en el marco perfecto para desarrollar su “doble vida ejemplar”, sacerdotal y literaria, como afirma el arzobispo periodista Antonio Montero. Ha optado por una vida sencilla, al servicio de sus feligreses, alejada de los efectos mediáticos y de la popularidad. En su parroquia pone en juego sus dotes innatas de animador juvenil con los métodos del movimiento Scout. Ha conseguido forjarse una cantera de fieles lectores, entre los que se encuentran la reina Sofía y la princesa Letizia. Su última novela, Los milagros del vino, ha supuesto para su familia, con tradición bodeguera, una enorme satisfacción.
