(Preparad el camino al Señor)
“En aquellos días apareció Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea. Decía: –Arrepentíos, porque está llegando el reino de los cielos. A él se refería el profeta Isaías cuando dijo: Voz del que grita en el desierto: «Preparad el camino al Señor, allanad sus senderos». Llevaba Juan un vestido de pelo de camello y una correa de cuero a la cintura, y se alimentaba de saltamontes y miel silvestre. Acudían a él de Jerusalén, de toda Judea y de toda la región del Jordán; ellos reconocían sus pecados y Juan los bautizaba en el río Jordán. Viendo que muchos fariseos y saduceos venían a que los bautizara, les dijo: –¡Raza de víboras! ¿Quién os ha enseñado a escapar del juicio inminente? Dad frutos que prueben vuestra conversión y no creáis que basta con decir: «Somos descendientes de Abrahán». Porque os digo que Dios puede sacar de estas piedras descendientes de Abrahán. Ya está puesta el hacha a la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no dé fruto va a ser cortado y echado al fuego. Yo os bautizo con agua para que os convirtáis; pero el que viene detrás de mí es más fuerte que yo y no soy digno de quitarle las sandalias. Él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego. Tiene en su mano el bieldo y va a aventar su parva; recogerá su trigo en el granero, y la paja la quemará con un fuego que no se apaga”. (Mt. 3, 1-12)

Allá. Por los años veinte, aparece en Israel, en las inmediaciones del río Jordán, un personaje, llamado Juan, que proviene del desierto, y trae un lema que grita a los cuatro vientos:”Convertíos; preparad el camino al Mesías que llega”. Y como señal del arrepentimiento, invita a recibir el bautismo. Por eso se llama Juan Bautista, o Juan, el bautizador.
Cada año, por estas fechas, la liturgia de la Eucaristía nos trae esta lectura. Es el adviento, el tiempo de prepararnos al gran acontecimiento de Dios hecho hombre, en la fiesta llamada de la Navidad. Navidad es igual que “natividad”, igual a “nacimiento”. Nacimiento de Jesús.
Tenemos un problema, que es el caer en la rutina, el acostumbrarnos, el no darnos cuenta de la novedad. El hecho de que cada año se repita, corre ese peligro de no darlo más importancia. Y la tiene.
Hoy, no está Juan para gritarnos el anuncio del Salvador. Pero su voz debe resonarnos desde la distancia y el tiempo. Se oyen otros gritos, razones, discursos, de muchos que se llaman “salvadores” de la persona, de la familia, de la humanidad. Jesús decía (lo escuchábamos en el evangelio del domingo pasado): “no vayáis tras ellos”. Son los pregoneros del bienestar a cualquier precio, o agoreros de castigos y desgracias. Sólo hay un Salvador, y a ese es a quien celebramos en la Navidad, y para el que nos preparamos en este adviento.
Cada uno debe hacerse su plan para responder a esta invitación del Bautista. Nadie tiene que fijarle las coordenadas de su plan personal. Pero hay ciertas actitudes, prácticas y orientaciones que valen para todos. Después de haber clausurado el “año de la misericordia”, algo tiene que habérsenos quedado de esta gran virtud, la que más sobresale en Dios, la que más puso de manifiesto el mismo Jesús, a su paso por la tierra. Vivamos con intensidad la misericordia en sus múltiples facetas y direcciones. Seguro que así viviremos un buen adviento, y llegaremos a la Navidad aptos para celebrar el acontecimiento más grande jamás ocurrido: la venida de Dios en nuestra propia carne.
