Nicolás Castellanos y el P. Damián
En el número de junio, la revista 21, en la sección “Preparándonos para la canonización”, que 
coordina un servidor, se incluye este texto de D. Nicolás Castellanos, misionero en Bolivia y Premio Príncipe de Asturias de la Concordia. Resulta un testimonio muy hermoso de alguien que está dedicado a los excluidos de hoy. Se lo agradecemos de corazón a D. Nicolás y ojalá sus palabras nos sirvan para ser también nosotros “profetas de la compasión” en nuestro mundo.
¿QUÉ ME SUGIERE LA FIGURA DEL P. DAMIAN?
Me sugiere VIVENCIA, UN MENSAJE Y UNA EVOCACIÓN.
El apóstol de los leprosos nos cautivó a los niños y jóvenes de la mitad del siglo XX de España.
Aquel film “MOLOKAI” levantó pasiones y heroísmos misioneros.
Hacer memoria y lectura creyente del P. Damián, en medio de esta sociedad plural, completa y diversa, es proclamar el mensaje actual de un profeta. Son profetas los que proclaman, anuncian y practican los valores del Reino: la justicia, la libertad, la fraternidad y otro muy importante y significativo, que no siempre se tiene en cuenta.
LA CAPACIDAD DE COMPASIÓN. Éste fue el mensaje radicalmente evangélico de DAMIÁN MOLOKAI. El profeta de la compasión:
Su opción absoluta por los leprosos, tan excluidos como en tiempo de Jesús.
Gesto y voz profética, que hoy nos recuerda el Espíritu Santo, como clave de la evangelización.
Albert Camus, en la “Peste”, sugería que el camino que había que escoger para llegar a la paz era la COMPASIÓN. Y para el teólogo alemán J. B. Metz, “la compasión que busca la justicia, es la palabra clave para el programa universal del Cristinianismo en la era de la globalización”.
“El leproso voluntario”, ciego, inválido, totalmente deformado, encarna maravillosamente el profeta de la Compasión, que necesita la Iglesia de hoy, nostálgica, entristecida y sin alegría.
Y una evocación, Damián Molokai, M. Ghandi y Martín Luther King son tres paradigmas en el camino de la interculturalidad e intereligiosidad.
