A medio camino entre las películas Disney de moraleja fácil y algunos célebres títulos de la literatura infantil que miran más a un público adulto como El principio o Alicia en el país de las maravillas; la virtud de Donde viven los monstruos reside en el realismo con el que se adentra en un tema como la infancia, casi siempre abordado de forma meliflua. Así pues, esta película, basada en un cuento de Maurice Sendak, no se amedrenta a la hora de presentar la inseguridad, el miedo, el egoísmo, la violencia, el odio y, sobre todo, la tristeza del protagonista. De hecho, los monstruos de la película, si bien son salvajes como se dice en el título original de la obra (Where the wild things are), también viven sumidos en la tristeza y confían en que el inesperado rey que aparece en sus vidas les rescate del tedio y la melancolía.
La historia presenta a un niño que, después de una fuerte discusión con su madre, se escapa de casa e inicia una huída que le conduce a una isla habitada por un grupo de monstruos. Allí, el pequeño Max tratará de evadirse haciéndose pasar por un rey y creyendo haber encontrado la tan anhelada familia que gire en torno a él. Sin embargo sólo lo logrará momentáneamente, hasta que comiencen a aparecer los problemas y descubra que sus nuevos amigos no son más que un reflejo de lo peor de sí mismo, dando lugar a la consecuente catarsis que le conduce, arrepentido y avergonzado, de vuelta al hogar.
Cabe destacar el mérito que tiene plasmar fielmente las ilustraciones del original y elaborar un guión a partir de un cuento que sólo contiene nueve frases. No obstante podríamos acusar a la película de tener un ritmo un tanto irregular, pero sus virtudes compensan sobradamente esta deficiencia. Uno de sus aciertos más arriesgados está en que, en el inicio de la era del 3D, ha osado crear unos monstruos mediante un proceso principalmente artesanal. Esto le confiere un acabado mucho más inocente e infantil y, por lo tanto, más acorde con la historia.
Desgraciadamente ya no está en los cines, pero os animo a verla, especialmente a todas aquellas personas mayores que fuisteis niños y seguís recordando que lo fuisteis. Os gustará.
