Expiación huye de todo esto y camina por otros derroteros. ¿Por qué centrarse siempre en la pareja de enamorados? ¿Y si el verdadero protagonista fuese el personaje causante de su separación? ¿Por qué no hacer una película sobre la culpa, en vez de otra historia de amor al uso? ¿Y si, por una vez, la narración se alejase del maniqueísmo y la sensiblería?
No me gustaría desvelar muchos detalles de la trama, pero sí dejar claro que el título hace justicia al contenido de la película. La historia gira sutilmente en torno al personaje de Briony, verdadera protagonista de la película. De niña cometió un pecado de fatales consecuencias, sin que hubiese un ápice de ingenuidad en su comportamiento; siendo joven comienza a experimentar el peso de la culpa; y ya, anciana, encuentra por fin un modo de expiar su pecado.
La entrevista final es sobrecogedora (cabe destacar el mérito que tiene la actriz que la interpreta) y logra trasmitir la paz que finalmente alcanza Briony gracias a un proceso de creación literaria.
